How Does Race Impact High School and College Success Rates of African American Males in Indiana? (Indiana Black Expo July 16, 2010)
What we are finding is that a particular population of Indiana students, African American males, are routinely and consistently under-performing, and clearly over-represented in all negative categories related to behavior problems, "leakage," drop-outs, and low test scores. Another area of growing concern in the "type" of diploma many African American males receive from Indiana high schools. At the same time, our interview findings suggest hope and good ideas for change. The role of mentoring, culturally relevant curricula, authentic caring pedagogy, institutional attention to helping African American males, adequate resources for support services, and connecting learning to the development of critical thinking skills and career paths suggest that targeted efforts can make a difference in the lives of many African American youth. View this presentation if you're interested in seeing how to make such a difference.
